Injured people during the last oil stopage

What happened at Dayuma, in the Amazonian province of Orellana, during the last oil stoppage?

Today, 1st December, Correa is speaking on his radio channel. Here are some extracts from his speech:

Ecologists are “extortionists”.

It is not the communities that are protesting, but a group of terrorists.
The people of the east don’t support the romantic environmentalists, and it is those childish leftists who want to destabilise the government.

Anarchy has finished, and this government will not permit popular excesses worse than Mamá Lucha [well-known creation of a campaign by a Mexican subsidiary of Wal-mart, aimed at mothers of families to publicise low-priced goods].

Don’t believe the romantic environmentalists. Everyone who opposes the development of the country is a terrorist.

There are terrorist people who make use of the inhabitants, saying that their territories have been forgotten. Don’t let yourselves be deceived.

The government is investigating who are behind all this. We even have information that sectors of the church are included. Hopefully this is untrue, because it would be terrible if church people were involved in such error.

The government will not allow exploitation of minerals and oil to be halted.

I refer to EcuaCorriente [the Ecuadorian sector of a Canadian mining company] because those millions will permit the country to be taken out of underdevelopment. We need them to build schools and health centers.

It is more immoral to avoid the cost-benefit of exploiting the ITT [oilfield] and making gaps in the jungle, because we need the money from exploitation of minerals and oil. I say it’s more immoral to let people die by defending birds and trees. (for background information on this issue click here)
The chief enemies of our project are the childish leftists and romantic ecologists, who are mistaken.

No way will we allow the exploitation of the resources needed by our country to be halted.

Everyone is opposed to destruction of nature, but if our development depends on it, and if the rest of the world won’t pay compensation for the ITT field, it will be exploited.

Zero tolerance of all those who want to halt production and generate chaos (referring to communities affected by mining, hydro-electricity, oil and timber exploitation), anarchists accustomed under other governments to paralyse development of the country when they feel like it – we shall punish them with the full force of the law.

THOSE ARE THE WORDS OF THE MAN WHO PROMISED THAT THE COUNTRY NOW BELONGS TO EVERYONE.

How far will repression go, with military man Fernando Zurita president of Petroecuador? (state oil company)

What does it mean, that against direct actions there would be “zero tolerance”?

What price will we social groups have to pay for our decision to vote in the second round against Álvaro Noboa, and to prevent him gaining power?

“When the last river dies, and when the last river is poisoned, we shall understand that petroleum cannot be eaten.”

DECREE OF EMERGENCY INTENSIFIES MILITARY REPRESSION IN DAYUMA, TARACOA AND INÉS ARANDO

Señora Anita Rivas, Mayor of the Municipal Government of Francisco de Orellana, has rejected Executive Decree No. 770 which declares a state of emergency in the Province of Orellana.

The chief municipal authority maintained that, on the pretext of the state of emergency, there has been an increase in violation of the rights of the inhabitants of the parishes of Dayuma and Inés Arango who are maintaining a campaign of action against the central government’s broken promises in the matter of roads: uniformed men of the Fourth Division of the Army, commanded by Brigadier Fabián Narváez Regalado, have raided homes, are assaulting, beating and have detained some 45 men, of whom 16 are being held in Petroproducción premises and two in police cells while the rest have disappeared.

Among the detainees are Juan Plazarte (28), Jorge Plazarte (36), Luis Moya, Arturo Moya, Abel Nina, Eduardo Anongonó and Fernando Garófalo.

She also revealed that leaders and inhabitants of these parishes have given evidence that they are being threatened with prosecution for supposed crimes of sabotage and terrorism, which creates a repressive scale of persecution and intimidation without due process under the pretext of imposing law and order.

On the other hand, through information from inhabitants it has been learned that Government authorities have made contact with citizens of the area, who, however, maintain that at the present time there is insufficient safety, since most of the men and leaders have fled and there are only the women, who have shown that in those conditions they would not agree to negotiate.

There is a huge threat from the Canadian Mining company Avalanche who have acquired through its subsidiary company Minera Avalanche S.A., the concession encompasses a total area of 77,692 ha in the provinces of Imbabura and Pichincha. Of the eighteen zones in the concession, twelve are unrestricted, while the last one is under the lowest level of governmental protection. Local communities are having meetings to formulate the problem, starting with a core of anti-mining people from the RED de bosques’ northwestern chapter, beginning to reach out to inform people of the danger, writing proposals to fund it all, and preparing to join others -such as DECOIN in Intag- in a large delegation to present the issue to the environmental commission of the Asamblea Constitucional in Montecristi in mid-January. This is a massive threat to communities and the bosques to the West of the Andes – it includes highly sensitive and important sites such as Mindo.

  • […] Correa then picked up the rhetoric, calling the lunatics: terrorists, extortionists, foreigners, romantic environmentalists, and "childish leftists who want to destabilise the government." […]
